Attracting millennials with new, modern technology

The race to hire is on. By 2029, the U.S. Census Bureau notes that the entire baby boomer generation will be over the age of 65. But even now, boomers are leaving the workforce in considerable numbers, and finding replacements will be stiff competition among organizations looking to attract the more modern-thinking millennial workforce.

But it's not just ping-pong tables, summer Fridays, and flexible work environments that will bring you top-tier talent. It's the technology you deploy throughout your organization, and the commitment you have to staying modern in an ever-changing business world.

In fact, a recent IDG Research Quick Poll showed that many companies need to improve upon their ability to attract younger workers, and cloud applications can play a critical role in drawing these flexible minds to your company.

Cloud applications offer the mobility, user-friendly interfaces, universal data access, and modern applications that many millennial workers are used to using on a daily basis. This generation of employees expects their personal technology and workplace technology to converge and share similar characteristics. Successful organizations need to capitalize on this growing trend to bring in the brightest minds and become a more alluring option than their competitors. A successful workforce is at the center of any company's growth, so looking to invest in the future of this more modern thinking culture is paramount.

How Can the Cloud Help?

The cloud offers flexibility. The cloud can help organizations deliver enterprise mobile applications that match the functionality of traditional on-premise applications to the expectations of mobile users, including millennials, who demand flexible access to critical business processes. With cloud technology, users can access critical information from anywhere, anytime, providing security for employees working in remote locations. For a generation that likes to work outside the cubicle at times, cloud technology provides that much-needed option.

The cloud promotes collaboration and brings social media into work - in a good way. Social media used to be taboo during work hours, but this no longer rings true. Employees want a sense of community with their teams. They want to collaborate together on a daily basis, even if they aren't based in the same physical location. Cloud technology provides new and innovative options for users and companies to connect, and can push necessary information in real time, to make keeping up with work tasks as simple as staying in touch on Twitter or Facebook. Workplace social collaboration tools, for instance, allow companies to build a centralized space for information sharing and tracking, where users can organize conversations into enterprise-wide streams and share key screens, data, and attachments.

The cloud offers beautiful user interfaces and design. The look-and-feel of business applications really matters. There has been a big shift in workers' expectations around technology and, to attract the millennial workforce, organizations need to meet those expectations with intuitive design and a more consumer-grade look-and-feel. These expectations need to be built into the overall user experience. Design is becoming an increasingly important aspect of technology to help companies move into more modern times.

In other words, millennials like to work with technology the same way they live with it, and cloud technology provides a platform to get these new applications up and running quickly.

To attract younger workers, companies need to leverage the latest cloud applications offering user-friendly interfaces supporting the mobile devices and applications that millennial workers want. Companies that fail to deliver a modern work environment might find themselves losing out to the competition and missing out on opportunities to grow the business with the help of this emerging workforce.
